El Servei de Mediació Intrajudicial Social (SMIS) és un projecte que neix amb la voluntat d'introduir la pràctica de la mediació com una nova eina de resolució de causes en l'àmbit judicial social. Aquest projecte forma part d'un pla pilot que s'inicia des de l'Observatori de la Mediació de la Universitat de Barcelona i amb el suport del Consell General del Poder Judicial, aquestes dues entitats han estan treballant per introduir la mediació intrajudicial com un element de millora i modernització de l'Administració de Justícia. La mediació en l'àmbit laboral, com a sistema alternatiu de resolució de conflictes, que es presenta mitjançant aquest projecte es planteja per donar una opció més dels ciutadans quan tenen una causa oberta i busca aconseguir 3 objectius: donar una resposta més àgil i ràpida a determinades causes, aconseguir que les parts d'una causa participin en la solució del seu cas i obtenir sentències en que tothom se senti guanyador i, per tant, que siguin perdurables en el temps i que no generin altres conflictes. Les matèries susceptibles a ser derivades a l'SMIS són la vulneració de drets fonamentals, les mesures de conciliació de la vida familiar i laboral, les modificacions substancials de les condicions de treball, les vacances i el reconeixement de drets.
